Who I AmMy name is Maria D. Smith and I am a writer. I'm well rounded with media and literature , with an emphasis in comedic screen writing and Black feminist readings. I like to advertise myself as "organically Black and optimistic" because both are sincerely true and existing in this intersectional identity is where I find pride in myself and my voice. Specifically, I'm a descendent of Tennessee sharecroppers who's currently in pursuit of her MFA in Writing for the Stage and Screen at Northwestern University. I specialize in comedic television writing, but will dibble and dabble in whatever form needs to tell the story. My inspirations range from Toni Morrison to Norman Lear, and from Yvette Lee Bowser to Andy Milonakis. Random? Sure. True and original? Always. If I've peaked you interest, don't be afraid to ask for more.

Artist StatementDedicated to expanding the narratives of the Black diaspora and all intersectional identities, my initiative as a writer is to create stories based off of real life that real people can relate to beyond the page, stage or screen.
